Westerly Hospital - Behavioral Health ED Renovation Project

A Critical Opportunity to Transform Emergency Care

Providing Safe, Compassionate Behavioral Health Crisis Care to Southern RI

Crisis Care

Across the greater Westerly community, the need for dedicated behavioral health crisis care has reached a critical point, affecting hundreds of neighbors each year who turn to Westerly Hospital in moments of greatest need. This project represents an urgent opportunity to provide safe, private, and compassionate care close to home, strengthening the hospital’s ability to serve our community when it matters most.

The Growing Need

  • 24,000 Emergency Department visits annually
  • Nearly 700 patients present with behavioral health needs
  • No dedicated treatment space for patients in crisis

The Challenge

  • Increased risk of self-harm, agitation, and escalation
  • Reduced privacy and dignity for vulnerable patients
  • Strain on staff, patients, and overall ED operations

The Solution: Construct five specialized behavioral health rooms within the Emergency Department.

These purpose-built treatment rooms will:

  • Enhance safety and reduce risk
  • Offer privacy and a calm, supportive environment
  • Enable faster intervention and stabilization

This redesign reflects a thoughtful approach to caring for patients in crisis, while strengthening care for all who rely on the Emergency Department.

The Opportunity:
A $2.75M Investment

With your support, we will:

  • Provide safer, more compassionate care for patients in crisis
  • Support frontline teams with the right environment and tools
  • Improve Emergency Department capacity and patient flow
  • Set a new standard for behavioral health care in our community

Together, we can transform emergency care and help more people return to health and stability.

With Gratitude

Thank you for considering support for this important effort at Westerly Hospital. Your partnership will help ensure that members of our community receive the safe, compassionate care they deserve, close to home.

We are deeply grateful for your commitment to improving behavioral health care and strengthening emergency services for Southern Rhode Island. Together, we can make a meaningful difference for patients, families, and care teams every day.
