The S&P 500 fell 3.6% in January, its worst first month of the year since 2009, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 9.49%, its worst month since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Fed's plans to raise interest rates in response to soaring inflation drove the market down dramatically.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, global stock markets plummeted, providing no relief to frustrated investors:

DAX in Germany fell 4%
Pan-European EUROSTOXX 50 fell 5.08%.

The US stock market fell even further in April, with the Nasdaq falling 13.3%, its worst monthly performance since 2008, and the S&P 500 falling 8.8%.

Then, if we only consider the years 2021 and 2022, gold has outperformed stocks as geopolitical uncertainty and inflation increased worldwide.

The annual average return of gold in 2020 was 24.6%, which was the second-highest return among a range of assets that year.

Gold is less affected by recessions

Since the end of the gold standard in 1971, gold has largely experienced positive price changes during recessions. And, in the three recessions since 2000, it has outperformed the S& P 500. While the price increases have not been dramatic, they have helped to solidify gold's position as a hedge against financial turmoil and a store of value.
