Our Team
"We are not like every other search firm"
Shepherd Staff was officially launched in 2006 making us the veteran church & non-profit staffing firm in existence. While there are new staffing firms starting every month, there are only a small handful of firms that offer a full suite of staffing services and have lasted more than just a few years. Unlike other firms, we do not operate on a volume-based business model, which means we are not the largest staffing firm - and that is just fine with us! Our ministry approach to helping organizations hire exceptional staff allows us to develop deep relationships with both clients and candidates. Our commitment to this is one of the many things that truly sets us apart from the rest.
- Our team is made up of both veteran ministry professionals and consultants who have developed exceptional and significant experience in the field of executive search. We know how important it is to get this right. As part of the Shepherd Staff team, our consultants leverage their years of experience, and their unique giftings to help churches and non-profits discover the very best candidates for any staff position.
- Every organization we partner with receives exceptional care and a team dedicated to not just filling a role but finding the RIGHT fit.
- Each search is staffed with the best team suited for that particular role and includes a dedicated Senior Level Team Leader, Research Team, and direct support from our Executive Leadership.

Our Process
"Our goal is to help you find the right fit."
Anyone can help you find a resume that fits the role, we strive to go beyond and find the right person for your organization as well. Over the past 17+ years, we have crafted a process that helps us do just that!
The discovery process includes:
- On-site Discovery Visit
- This visit includes interviews with the search team, staff, leadership, and other stakeholders. We seek to learn all we can about your specific context, the nature of the position, and the desired qualifications for candidates.
- We also learn your process and commit to the specific process steps and lines of communication we will use to manage the search with you.
- Organization/Position materials and data collection
- Demographic analysis
- Organizational cultural analysis
- Job description, compensation, and hiring process evaluation
- Post-visit evaluation and recommendations
Once the Discovery Visit has been completed we compile our data into an Opportunity Profile which is shared with interested candidates to give them insight into your opportunity, the position, the organizaton, the leadership, and the community.
As potential candidates are identified we begin the interview process, educate them about your opportunity, and introduce them to your process.
Interested candidates who fit the search criteria are brought into our vetting process which includes:
- A series of interviews - including a spouse video interview
- Written responses to custom-designed questions for your position
- Personality Assessments
- Reference checks and social media screening
- Collection of video and other media of candidates
- Background check (completed once the finalist candidate is identified)
We manage the logistics and maintain constant communication to keep you and the candidates informed on the state of the search.
- Weekly update calls with the Hiring Authority
- Weekly reports updating your team on the search status and candidate information.
- Continuous refinement of search criteria
There are no limits to the number of candidates that we will present. We continue to source candidates for as long as it takes. The presentation process continues until it becomes clear to everyone involved that you have a true finalist candidate. At that point, our efforts go towards helping you finish the process. To help with this we provide the following:
- Web-based candidate presentation portfolio provided for each candidate
- Online feedback and ranking system for the church hiring team
- Guided evaluation and discussion of each candidate
- Our team handles the scheduling of interviews
- Our team participates in the interview process and offers post-interview evaluations
The Placement Phase begins when you and the candidate agree to employment. We remain present through this process to assist with negotiating all of the details of the formal offer and in clarifying transitional issues, including:
- Presenting an offer of employment
- Assistance with salary, compensation, and other financial arrangements with the finalist candidate
- Final criminal background and reference checks
- 365 Followup - we stay in touch with both the church and the candidate for the next year.
Our COST
"The ‘industry standard’ for search firms is 30%-33%."
Our fee is 30% of the base salary. Even our minimum fee (for salaries under $70k) is the lowest in this industry at $20k.
Rather than asking organizations to pay the entire Search Fee in the first three months, our fee is spread into 6 equal installments making it much easier on your monthly cash flow.
The only additional fee would be the Discovery Visit Retainer Fee which is paid upfront and covers the cost of up to two of our consultants onsite visit to gain valuable insights about the organization, staff, leaders, congregation, and community. It’s a 2-3 day visit full of meetings and interviews. This retainer fee is only $4000.
What others are saying about Shepherd Staff

"Shepherd Staff provided outstanding service during our search for a Senior Pastor at Shandon Baptist Church. Shepherd Staff reached an audience of candidates that our team would not, and could not, have reached on its own. The Discovery Process conducted by Shepherd Staff resulted in a thorough understanding of our church, situation, and needs. The advice about and recommendations for our search process was timely and consistently on target. Throughout the search process, our team and Shepherd Staff engaged in prayer, robust discussion, and thoughtful deliberation. They frequently and consistently reminded us that the hiring decision was ours and was always to be pursued with the Holy Spirit as our guide."
- David
Shandon Baptist Church
"I could not have imagined an easier discovery process for discovering the next steps God had in mind for my ministry. I learned so much about myself as I completed the assessments and answered the questions. Shepherd Staff had incredible insights on the church which indicated that they had done their homework to reduce the likelihood of a poor match. This is a gold standard process for your next staff position. "
- Bruce
Candidate

"Shepherd Staff was incredibly helpful in finding candidates for our position, maintaining clear and open lines of communication, guiding us, and the candidates through the process until completion. We had a very positive experience. I highly doubt we would have found the candidate we hired without the assistance of Shepherd Staff. In fact, I doubt that we would have hired anyone at all by this point."
- Josh
Faith Community Church
"My experience with Shepherd's Staff has been full of transparency and honesty. I'm delighted to have a company that works hard to ensure the vetting process is thorough and a great fit. I always feel as though I receive honest answers to any question asked. I would recommend this company to anyone.."
