Leadership Report

*Includes our flagship programs: McNulty Leadership Program, The Lipman Family Prize, and the Center for Leadership and Change Management

Dear Board Members,
School Partners, and Friends,

We hope this message finds you well and enjoying the beginning of fall in whatever form that looks like for you. As always, our summer work was full of intentionality, programming, and getting ready to welcome new classes to campus. Campus is yet again full of activity, curiosity, and energy. As educators and program administrators, that energy fuels us and is a constant reminder of the honor it is to be a part of our students' education.

In this newsletter edition, we'd love to share a bit about our summer semester work:

  • Executives from a variety of industries spent the day at our 28th Wharton Leadership Conference in June
  • WEMBA classes were busy with People Lab and ECFP programming, and new classes participated in orientation and team formation
  • William P. Lauder Leadership Fellows started their work with their FT MBA Learning Teams

With gratitude,

The MLP Senior Leadership Team

Leadership development opportunities outside of the classroom are highly customized to the needs of working professionals in Wharton’s Executive MBA program. This summer, the WEMBA 51 East (PHL), West (SF), and Global (GL) classes kicked off their year with Team Orientation and Formation.

TEAM ORIENTATION AND FORMATION

Led by seven MLP staff members, WEMBA Class 51 Orientation launched with two high-energy days of purposeful team formation. These sessions set the stage for students to effectively collaborate in their MGMT 6100 simulation teams and throughout their academic journey in their learning teams. Through a series of dynamic team-building activities, students built trust, established boundaries, and laid a strong foundation for success — both in the classroom and insights to bring back to their organizations.

The WEMBA 51 East and 51 San Francisco orientation ran an entire week at the end of May, while the 51 Global orientation continued into a second week. Using a similar model to the full-time MBA program, students took this time to meet their Academic and Career Advisors, select classes, and network with their new classmates, received an introduction to the MLP program and its set of offerings, completed the Leadership Navigation Challenge, and participated in MGMT 6100.

I now communicate emotions more effectively, which strengthens my connections with colleagues and enhances team dynamics. The program has improved my ability to build stronger relationships by refining both my verbal and non-verbal communication."

A snapshot of a few of our WEMBA programs:

P3: Purpose, Passion, Principles (P3) - typically runs Jan through March

Participants are matched into small groups that enable both community and accountability. P3 groups then engage in a series of structured discussions that explore diverse definitions of personal success and support intentional alignment of life and career choices.

Wharton Leadership Ventures (WLV)

WEMBA students also have the chance to participate in intensives as part of WLV programming. Several joint venture opportunities with FT MBA students include intensives such as FDNY and Quantico. These experiential learning opportunities provide students the opportunity to step out of their comfort zone, exceed personal limitations, and experience leadership firsthand in high-challenge, immersive environments.

Executive Coaching and Feedback Program (ECFP)

The ECFP offers WEMBA students across East, West, and Global cohorts the opportunity to translate feedback into growth through personalized executive coaching. Students complete the Wharton Leadership 360, gaining a comprehensive view of leadership strengths and weaknesses to work on. ECFP then pairs participants with an experienced executive coach for six one-on-one sessions. Together, they turn insights into actionable goals, accelerate leadership development, and equip students to amplify their impact in the classroom, their organizations, and beyond.

My executive coach was outstanding, providing a perfect blend of expertise, empathy, and practical guidance in every session. Her ability to create a safe, non-judgmental space and tailor her approach to my unique needs and goals allowed me to gain clarity, strengthen my leadership skills, and address blind spots with confidence.”

The Leadership Fellows (LF) program is a highly selective 16-month leadership development and coaching role designed for second-year students to support incoming MBA students navigate their first year at Wharton. The LFs are service-oriented and highly committed students who learn concrete leadership strategies, apply those learnings to support the development of first-year Learning Teams, and habitually reflect on how they can both model and cultivate high-performance teamwork.

Leadership Fellows kick off their training in the late spring of their first year. Through a series of workshops and trainings, they undergo intense preparation leading up to the beginning of Pre-Term. The LFs work with their learning teams throughout the year, engaging in goal-setting, reflection, and team-building exercises.

The Role of a Leadership Fellow

The training of a Leadership Fellow focuses on the following competencies:

In addition, LF program champion William P. Lauder W’83 engages with fellows at regular Symposia. Following his endowment of the LF program in 2018, William has returned to campus each year (with virtual sessions in 2020) to share practical insights and leadership principles that LFs can apply to their work with one another, as well as with their cohorts and learning teams. Through fireside chats and small-group discussions, William encourages LFs to become lifelong students of leadership. Symposia topics include gratitude, decision-making, organizational transformation, and lessons from William's experience as a global leader who prioritizes a commitment to education and mentorship.
