Do You Know-a the Feijoa? Pronounced “fay-zho-uh,” this oblong green fruit is also known as the pineapple guava for its super-sweet flavor. Try it to bring a taste of summer to your winter snacking.
Fun Facts About Feijoas
Tropical Treats: Feijoas are green, oval-shaped fruits with small fronds at one end. Inside, they sport pale yellow-green flesh and sweet jelly-like centers. The Feijoa is ready to eat when slightly soft and when the jellied sections in the heart of the fruit are clear.
Choose Your Size: California Feijoas are typically just two to three inches long, but in some areas of the world—like New Zealand—they can grow bigger than your hand!
Sensational Sweetness: These tropical treats are as sweet as dessert, with candy-like notes of pineapple, guava, and strawberry. To eat one, cut it in half and scoop out the tasty insides.
Born in Brazil: In 1815, a German explorer traveling in Brazil collected wild Feijoas and spread them across Europe. Today, farmers and gardeners grow them all over the world, including in California and New Zealand.
