Presentation: Societal Scents
Art and politics have always been intertwined, but how might fragrance act as a reflection of current societal moods? Beginning with more historical accounts, such as perfume as solely reserved for royalty and religious rituals in ancient Egypt, it would trace through to the modern-day, where it is a full-fledged consumer product. How are dupe brands and AI-generated fragrances impacting the meaning of fragrance in society but also for the individual?
TABLE ONE: Carla Seipp // Workshop: Scent As Autobiographical Medium
This would start with a short presentation on the use of scent as a personal storytelling medium, whether in classic literature or the idea of signature scent as a form of identity. How do our cultural and geographical backgrounds impact this? In a world where signature scents are being favored over fragrance wardrobes, how can we continually and authentically express our identity through scent?
This would be followed by a short 10-15 minute exercise where participants are asked to write down the scents that underlined different chapters of their lives and in what ways, picking up on factors like notes, fragrance families, projection, etc. I would then ask for audience feedback and together we would create an “olfactive identity” map, picking up on any shared traits or experiences around scent.
